Choosing the Right Rottweiler Puppy for You

Categorized: pets | 1 comment

Rottweilers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States. Many people buy a Rottweiler puppy every year. Unfortunately, many of those people don’t know how to evaluate a puppy’s temperament, and they end up with a dog that does not match their lifestyle. Rottweiler puppies are just like other puppies in that some of the pups in a litter will be more dominant, while other will be more submissive. You can use these differences in personality to your advantage if you only know a few ways to evaluate a puppy’s temperament. Your breeder is likely to be able to advise you about this, but we offer a few tips below so that you can go into the breeder’s house prepared to make an educated choice.

Puppies that are more dominant are likely to grow up to be more demanding and energetic. They would be great for a person who is looking for a rough-and-tumble running companion, a dog who is always up for a game of tug-of-war or wrestling. However, if you would prefer a dog that was a bit calmer and less active, and less likely to go tearing through your house at full gallop, you might do well to choose the more submissive puppy. These tips can save you a great deal of aggravation and expense when it comes time for your Rottweiler training.

To evaluate the pups’ temperaments, pay attention to them from the moment you first walk into the room where they are located. The pups that jump right up and run over to you are likely to be the more outgoing, dominant pups. The pups that hold back are likely to be more submissive. If you take each pup and roll it onto its back and hold it for a moment, the ones that squirm right away are the more dominant pups. The ones that are content to be held in that position for several seconds are more likely to be somewhat more submissive in nature. Just remember these simple tips and do these tests on your own, and you are likely to make a good choice!
