Easy Steps for Credit Repair

People always assume that keeping my credit in great shape is easy for me, since I have spent most of my life working in the banking and financial industry.  The honest truth is that no one is immune from life’s curve balls and there have been several times in my life that I have been in need of credit restoration.  Most people who find this out want to know exactly what I have done in the past to repair my own credit.

The very first thing that I do when focusing on my credit is get a copy of my credit bureaus and make sure that there are no errors.  In all likelihood you will discover more errors that you expect.  As an example, I had a very dear friend who suffered for an illness and had to file for a medical bankruptcy.  Because she had included all of her debts in her bankruptcy, she had not bothered checking her credit reports.  When she finally checked her credit she was very surprised to find that most all of her accounts were still reporting as past due with a balance.  Correcting these errors was all it took for her to see an improvement in her credit score.

If you are serious about having the best possible credit score, one of the most important things for you to do is get rid of your credit card debt.  Although you may be making your credit card payments on time, if you have balances this is lowering your score.    How much credit you have available to you versus how much you are using is the second most important factor in determining your credit score.  For the best possible credit score, try to get your account balances down below 20% of the credit limit on each account.
