How to Construct a Dog Pen
Categorized: pets | 1 comment
By building a dog exercise pen for your pet you will be enabling him to get lots of exercise and fresh air while making sure that he can’t escape your garden. They are relatively easy to construct and you can easily buy all the parts separately or as a flat packed kit.
Start by marking out the size and shape of the dog pen on the ground outside. It needs to be as large as you can accommodate, at least long enough for your dog to be able to reach some speed when running up and down it. You will need both corner and run posts so that there is a post at least every ten feet. Start by digging deep holes for the posts and filling them with concrete so that there is no way that a post can be knocked down by a dog jumping up at it. Once the cement has dried you can buy or rent a fence stretcher to help you stretch the chain link wire between posts. Fix the wire securely to each post and put a top rail along the top of the fence. If your dog is particularly active or large then you may want to put a roof over the whole structure to stop him from being able to jump out.
Special gates for dog pens can be bought separately and are easy to fix between two posts. Make sure that you invest in a good quality latch or your dog will soon work out how to escape through the door! A lock is probably a good idea.
Once you’ve built the run then you will need to add certain accessories to make it as comfortable and enjoyable for your dog as possible. A dog kennel will give him a cosy place to sleep and a wide variety of toys will keep him entertained when you are at work.
