These devices were only used by them but sometime around ten years ago they decided to release their great discovery for the public. The public, however, was forced to use the GPS only under strict conditions being tightened by rules. The GPS back then was really unreliable because the information it provided was not accurate at all.
Because the military later decide to lift all the outrageous rules they implied to the public toward GPS usage, scientists and developers were then able to create new and improved forms of it. This meant that the accuracy of the GPS turned from an error 100 yards to only 20 yards in just a matter of years.
If you are a hiker then the GPS is your savior especially because there are really small GPS devices today that can be held in your pocket. You won’t have to take maps and compasses with you anymore, just because the GPS will be those two objects in one.
