My Favorite Handmade Blankets for Babies

If you’re looking for genuine handmade baby blankets to give as a gift and are sick of the shops that advertise “handmade” and then in fine print the labels say “Made In China”, you’ll be as happy as I was to stumble upon a funky company owned and operated by women who actually make blankets for babies that look like “haute couture”. The company is called Baby Talk and they have a shop online that’s really easy to use. But let me tell you about my favorite items:

The first is a blanket that’s covered in lady bugs and has a fuzzy green color on one side and vibrant orange on the other. It makes for a fabulous fun piece to give color to the nursery no matter if it’s for a boy or a girl. But aside from decorating the crib or basinet, it’s super soft, plush velour, but totally machine washable. It’s really simple but bright and colorful, one of those pieces that becomes a toddler’s favorite bankie to drag around.

The best blankets for babies that are newborn may be swaddling cloths and receiving blankets that are thin and can be tied tight, but the twist on the handmade items from Baby Talk is that they have a series called A Gift Form God that are ultra soft and have a bible verse stitched on a corner. They make fabulous christening gifts and come in all the right colors, pink, blue, yellow and white. If you’d prefer not to get biblical, then go for the similar style of soft little swaddling wraps that have no verses or stitching, just an embossed design within the fabric of little stars and moons. Naturally these are called the Over The Moon series.

Some mommies love the crochet handmade baby blankets in an afghan style throw, and the most delicate one I’ve found is made by a family of artisans that sell under the name of Patricia Avenue. One of the softest and best pieces that’s great for a newborn is the one they call the “natural oatmeal yarn” design. Since it’s really handmade and very delicate, it’s a bit expensive at just under $70, but if grandma doesn’t crochet or knit, it may be a very welcome treat for some lucky newborn.
