Potty training dogs in the modern world
Categorized: pets | 1 comment
In today’s modern world, it often happens that there is nobody at home during the day. Having a puppy and having to do dog potty training could present a real challenge in such situations. If you have a private fenced of yard where the puppy can stay during the day and it cannot come to any harm there, it is not a problem. If the puppy however has to be watched and let out of the house but nobody is home for a number of hours, there are some possible options available:
- Going to doggie day care.
Many veterinarians and dog trainers offer some form of doggie day care to working owners and their puppies. In fact, some enterprising dog lovers are opening facilities devoted strictly to day care for pooches. - Hiring a pet sitter or dog walker.
Try asking an at-home neighbor you trust to walk your puppy and play with her once or twice a day or even to stay at the neighbor’s home while you’re at work. You can also contact a commercial pet-sitting service. Family, friends or even students in the area might be willing to assist in this way for some extra pocket money. - Bringing your pup to work.
Some companies allow their employees to bring their pets to work with them. Check to see if your company’s one of them — and, if so, what the rules are. You may find that you can have a canine officemate. (Having a dog in your office makes work a lot more fun!)
With some of the scenarios mentioned above, you would have to make sure that the care taker understands what they need to do in order to potty train your dog.
If none of the above options are available to you, you could keep your puppy in an enclosed area in the house. Somewhere without carpets would be suitable, typically a kitchen or bathroom. Cover the floor with newspapers and when you get home, simply clean up the mess without either praising or rebuking the puppy – there is nothing either they or you could do about it. During the time that you are at home with your puppy you should still follow the normal dog house training steps. As the dog grows older, they will be able to last longer without having to go to the toilet. At about 6 months they should reach the stage that they won’t need to go for a couple of hours at a time, so your problem will be solved naturally. Just make sure to take the dog out before you leave in the morning, and again as soon as you return. If they do their potty outside during these times, be sure to praise and reward them.
