Studies continue to be done to explain which people are most likely to have a panic attack. Normally when studies are done on this topic, test regions are selected and persons in it are monitored over a given period of time. The test subjects are often chosen carefully so that they can come closest to representing entire populations in a country or in any other regions. Many of the tests that have been done to show the likelihood of occurrence of symptoms of panic attacks have indicated that 0.5% of the people in a given population will end up having a panic attack say in a month.
It has also been shown that women experience symptoms of panic attacks twice as much as men. There have been many explanations for this but the main one has been that women tend to deal with their issues with emotions while men only use emotions as a last resort. In other words men tend to take care of matters with their heads while women tend to take care of matters with their hearts thus making them more prone to emotional problems. Women has also been shown to be very likely to have panic attacks that are accompanied with agrophobia. Statistics place the prevalence of women having panic attacks followed by agrophobia at a ratio of 3:1 to men. The ratio women not experiencing agrophobia after panic attacks is 2:1 to that of men.
Statistics have also shown that symptoms of panic attacks have been experienced in young children although the cases of these have not been as many. People who are likely to experience these symptoms have been placed in an age bracket of 20 to 45 years. The people in this age range are proven to be likely to experience a few panic attacks every couple of months with others having the attacks at least every week. The chances of having panic attack symptoms which in this age range are increased with records of history of the symptoms in family members. There have also been statistics showing that people who are above the age of 45 are less likely to suffer from symptoms of panic attacks.
Poor coping mechanisms have been placed among the first causes of symptoms of panic attacks. People who face these symptoms have found it hard to deal with situations such as the loss of a loved one or the ending of an emotional contact.
