Irish forestry is the most part comprised of Sitka spruce. That is the tree that dominates the forestry landscape of this country. It is one of the main trees which is used on Irish forestry plantations for many different reasons. One of the most predominant is that the commercial capability of this tree, its capacity to produce good quality timber within a reasonably short space of time, it is one of the best reasons for its plantation here. Another reason is that it will grow on almost any soil, from the best soils in the country to some of the worst soils in the country. It will also grow in some spectacularly wild conditions. It will grow in the conditions that are experienced in the west of Ireland, for instance.
