Use Positive Reinforcement In Potty Training

Categorized: baby | No comments

Most children start potty training when they are two years old. This is not always an easy process, and many parents find it frustrating. With time and consistency, a child will learn to use the potty.

There are some ways to tell if a kid is ready to start learning how to use the toilet. If they find their diapers uncomfortable, if they can follow directions, and if they are asking about the potty, it can mean they are ready. Be sure to have an open and honest conversation, answering any questions they may have. Actually show them their training potty and some “big kid” underwear. Replace their diapers with training pants. Make this a fun and exciting conversation without placing too much pressure on the kid. Rewarding the child when they are training is very important. Baby boy shoes or baby girl shoes are a nice way to do this.

Despite what some diaper punishments may imply, punishing a child for not using the toilet will not work. Children respond best to positive reinforcement. This means desired behavior is rewarded, while undesired behavior is ignored. If the child has an accident, do not berate or yell. Stay calm and try to be encouraging. When the child uses the toilet successfully, reward them with love and affection. Diaper punishments will only teach the child shame and must not be used.

Some parents find that using a reward chart helps encourage their children. Decide upon a reasonable number of favorable outcomes. For some children it can be five, for others it might have to be lower. Every time the kid is successful, they can put a sticker on their chart. When they earn all the stickers, they get a prize. The prize must be something the child is willing to work for. It could be a toy, candy, food, or quality time.

Potty training is a big step for young children. Supporting them with positive reinforcement will help make things easier. Help the child through this big change.
