Why Free Product Samples Matter: Different Perspectives

Categorized: Uncategorized | 5 comments

Free product samples serve a different purpose for each participant in a transaction. The one offering them may see them as an investment that will bear returns in the near future. This makes sense. When the circumstances are right, giving free product samples has the effect of promoting one’s new product and winning new customers to the business. Being able to increase one’s sales exponentially makes up for whatever expenses are incurred in the promotion of the product.

The person who receives the free sample has a different perspective. He is not necessarily concerned about whatever expenses the business owner may have incurred to promote the product. Rather, he is interested in seeing whether the new product will meet his needs. From his perspective, free product samples are a matter-of-fact thing, a phenomenon that is to be expected in the world of business. In his opinion, any serious business that wants customers to give it the time of day should be willing to invest money in advertising and special promotions. This customer is bound to be unsympathetic to the company that tries to make its customers jump through hoops in order to receive the free samples.

It happens to be the case that most customers hate being manipulated. They resent manipulative commercials that do not reveal the most important information about products. They also resent promotions that claim to be one thing when they are actually something different. Promotions that fall into this category include those that offer free product samples (with the emphasis on the word “free”) and then, out of nowhere, demand that the customer pays a small fee for shipment and handling. Alternatively, the promotions may ask customers to devote 30 minutes of their time to the completion of a survey. This may not be a monetary payment, but time is indeed valuable. Any company that demands of its customers 30 minutes of their time, all for the sake of receiving a free item, willfully misunderstands the meaning of the word “free”.

It is clear from the above that companies can be unscrupulous in their promotion of what they claim to be free products. It is possible for customers to be unscrupulous too. This is the case when they use fraudulent means to acquire free samples that they are not actually eligible to receive. Additionally, they may have absolutely no intention of ever purchasing the company’s products. This latter action is not a grave sin, though. Customers do not sign pledges guaranteeing to buy a particular product. Additionally, business owners already know that there’s no guarantee that they will get new customers when they offer free product samples.
